Hello-
I am campaigning for the 2016 Paralympic Games in Rio and I ask you to join my team.
32 years ago I broke my neck in a diving accident.
I grew up on Nantucket Island, enamored of birds and sailboats. Both free to come and go with the wind and the seasons. Audubon and Darwin were my heroes. The brave men of the whale fishery, whose history, as a native Nantucketer, I was so keenly aware of, taught me to love the sea. Now after a 30+ year hiatus from sailing, I am committed to nothing less than competing in sail racing at the highest level of my ability.
Competitive sports are not often in reach for quadriplegics. In sailing, this is not the case. With well-practiced skills and proper equipment, a quadriplegic skipper can sail equally to an able-bodied sailor!
I am campaigning to the Paralympics to demonstrate to any person with a disability that it can be done.
My goals are twofold:
• A personal goal: skippering a Sonar in the 2016 Paralympic Games.
• A philanthropic goal: creating a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing quadriplegics with assistive devices, for little to no charge, that allow them to realize the liberation of body, mind, and spirit that the sport of sailing provides.
When you join my team, your help combines with the help of many others. Together we can mobilize the financial and other resources required for a successful campaign.
Donations of any amount are welcome.
Please consider sponsoring our campaign.
Let's sail hard together all the way to Rio and bring home the gold!
Welcome Aboard!
Richard
