basic knowledge, but in a northerly if you are out in the lake left side will pay both up and down, even though there is more current on that side.

There is a reason that it is called Lake St. Silly. The predominant winds are out of the SE and 5-8 knots. When it is a true Easterly it will be extra unstable. Always watch over the land for building thunderheads and be ready to suspend your pre-conceived ideas and just go with the wind you have.

two streams of current to think about when you are racing a dinghy in the lake. One channel goes down the canadian side and is surprisingly strong and the other is the freighter channel which goes down the american side. Normally you do not race close enough to the bottom of the lake to be overly concerned with avoiding the side of the course with the freighter channel but the canadian channel seems to affect things more than most appreciate.

Thomas Hardware in Grosse Pointe and Mike's Marine Supply in St. Clair Shores are the best for problem solving. Of course there are also some West Marines around. When you are at Bayview YC you have to try the "Hummers". For housing local sailors are very welcoming to having guests as the hotels are not that convenient.
